The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) joins the UK India Business Council

By Kealan Finnegan

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has joined the UK India Business Council (UKIBC) as an Associate Member to help further extend its reach in India.

India has emerged as an attractive destination for the engineering and technology sector, and an increasing number of multinationals are establishing their R&D centres in India. The engineering sector contributes 12 per cent of India’s GDP and the country is forecast to capture up to US$ 45 billion in R&D services by 2020.

In order to contribute to and benefit from this development, the IET in India acts as a centre of knowledge sharing in the field of electrical and electronic engineering, IT, communications and manufacturing between engineers working in industry and those in academia. The IET has nearly 160,000 members in 127 countries.

Having recognised India’s growing importance as a centre of global engineering excellence the IET first opened an India office in Bangalore, India’s “Silicon Valley”, in 2006, and has subsequently established a growing network of professional Indian engineers in the South of India, and increasingly across the rest of the country.

The UKIBC provides UK companies with access to, and support in capturing the opportunities in the Indian market through market intelligence, its membership network and market entry services; such as bespoke market research and office facilities in India’s major business cities.

Speaking about the IET’s membership of the UKIBC James Howe, IET International Business Manager, said “We see the UKIBC as a valuable source of market intelligence that will complement our local staff knowledge and would like to use this relationship to engage with other British companies who are doing business in India.”

Richard Heald, Group CEO, UKIBC added “We look forward to working closely with the IET, as Europe’s largest professional body of engineers they represent exactly the sort of expertise that India’s Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing needs to continue growing rapidly.”

Heald added, “There are huge opportunities in India for professional engineers in almost every sector from major civil engineering projects, energy projects, design and production, right through to information technology.”
